ETC Consult matches people with jobs. It assists organisations in hiring and developing the most suitable people and assists individuals choose the right job. It does so through psychometric assessment of ability, aptitudes, personality, motivations and educational, social and work experiences: quantifies the outcomes and makes recommendations. It trains people in the use of psychometric tests and supplies the tests from leading international test publishers to those accredited to use them.

What led you to starting your business?

The challenge; the danger; the independence and the opportunity to test myself.

How did you raise the funds you need for your business?

Went and worked in Saudi Arabia.

What is the most significant lesson you have learnt in running your business?

Be an optimist; have ideas; have access to money; be prepared to work twice/three times as long and as hard as employees; hire the best people and be lucky!

What has been the proudest moment in your business so far?

Producing our online career guidance module for those of us in life whose educational, career and/or socio-economic history could have been better; esteem is low; optimism is ebbing. It assesses combined interests and aptitudes in non-academic mode and presents an instant report with a list of 16 careers that the individual will find interesting and we well able to do – or learn how to do – and guidance on how to go about getting into them. It concludes with an inspirational message on how to go to go on to the next rungs of a successful and happy career. It is interesting; quick; inexpensive, personalised and shows us all that there are dozens of jobs in which we can compete with the best.

What have been the biggest challenges in your business to date?

The financial crash.

What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs thinking of starting a business?

Beg, borrow, but don’t steal, and do it, if you don’t, you will regret it forever.

What’s the best business book you’ve ever read?

The Peter Principle.
