Cosmetic Association Ltd

Summary of Business:

The Cosmetic Association was formed almost 25 years ago in response to a need for non-medical distribution companies to be able to compete with medical and OTC companies at an annual trade event for the Pharmacy industry. It has grown in size and stature and is the major trade event for the Pharmacy sector and has expanded to gift and beauty sectors.
In 2011 the Association was changed to a Limited Company and is Directed by Kevin Gaul and Jo Somerville.

What led you to starting your business?

We started The Cosmetic Association to give non-medical distribution companies an opportunity to perform at the annual trade show for the Pharmacy sector in particular.

How did you raise the funds you need for your business?

We created a membership fee per company entering the organisation. Non payment of the fee means no stand at the trade fair.

What is the most significant lesson you have learnt in running your business?

Added to being flexible with members, always keep the rule.

What has been the proudest moment in your business so far?

After nearly 25 years in a voluntary position in the organisation I was voted Managing Director in 2011.

What have been the biggest challenges in your business to date?

Keeping costs as low as possible to allow as many members as possible to exhibit.

What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs thinking of starting a business?

Knowing you have a market for the product is necessary. Funding is so important. When the funding is at an acceptable level, hard work and complete dedication for the first few years is vital.

What’s the best business book you’ve ever read?

Can’t remember the exact name but it was “you don’t have to do it yourself to know what you want as a Manager”.

Who is the entrepreneur you admire the most?

Bill Cullen is one of my favourites. Unfortunately he is not doing well at the moment, but he will rise again.

What’s your website?

What Social Networking sites does your business use?

How has the SFA helped you in your business?

SFA has helped me grow in a personal development way. I have attended many of the events being held and have networked where possible. SFA is a safety net for our members with the problem solving experiences.
