SFA Slams Postal Strike

Widespread disruption damaging to entire economy

The Chairman of the Small Firms Association, AJ Noonan has condemned the on-going closure of the nation’s postal service due to strike action by An Post contractors. He commented: “It is entirely unacceptable for the nation to be held to ransom in this way. This strike needs to be immediately suspended and all parties need to engage in talks to resolve this crisis. An efficient postal system is essential to Ireland’s 200,000 small businesses. Many of our members still rely on the postal service to fulfil orders, and to send and receive invoices, statements and payments. The longer this strike continues the bigger negative impact it will have on cash flow for Irish small businesses, which could lead to job losses and potential closures.”

Ends.

The SFA released a further comment when the dispute was called off:

SFA Director Patricia Callan commented: "The Small Firms Association welcomes the resumption of normal postal services. This action was unnecessary and has caused severe disruption to Ireland's 200,000 small businesses, many of whom were unable to fulfil customer orders and have suffered delayed payments.  The Government must take measures to ensure it does not occur again."
