- Megazyme wins the Overall SFA National Small Business Award 2013
- 37 Finalists employ over 550 people
- Minster for Small Business presents Awards
Megazyme International Ireland has won the Overall SFA National Small Business Award 2013. Megazyme International Ireland is a cutting edge biotechnology company based in Bray Co Wicklow employing 34 people. They are involved in the development and supply of innovative analytical test kits and reagents for the agricultural, food, wine, dairy and biotechnology industries.
The six category winners were:

· Outstanding Small Business (up to 5 employees) - Celtic Rider
· Innovator of the Year - Megazyme International Ireland

The presentation of the award was made by Minister for Small Business, John Perry, TD at the Awards Ceremony in Trinity College, this evening Thursday, 7th March. This is the ninth year of the SFA National Small Business Awards, which are organised by the Small Firms Association.
Announcing the winner, AJ Noonan, SFA Chairman said “Megazyme Ireland is a perfect example of a small Irish business punching above its weight on the international stage. The scale of growth and the ability to effectively manage an ever evolving business is a real testament to management and staff at Megazyme. They have a long history with the SFA Awards as category winners and I am delighted to present them with the Overall Award for 2013.”
Guest of Honour, Minister John Perry commented: “Awards like these are important as they give well deserved recognition to the entrepreneurial efforts of the men and women in the small business sector, right across our country, whose continued commitment, drive and hard work plays a central role in our future economic advancement. The ability of small businesses to succeed and grow will underpin our future potential for jobs, growth and prosperity. SME’s will be a key driver of the economic recovery across the country and indeed Europe, and this Government is committed to supporting this key sector. That is why this Governments primary focus, over the last two years, has been on jobs and growth and specifically why we prioritised the introduction of measures in the Budget and the Action Plan for Jobs that will support the SME sector.”
The awards are sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia, Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, Chartered Accountants Ireland, AIB, O2 and the Emerging New Business category is sponsored by the County and City Enterprise Boards.
Speaking at the event, Noonan stated: “The companies here tonight are the engines of our economic recovery. Collectively they employ over 550 people and predict that by 2014 this number will have grown to over 620. They play a critical role in sustaining and creating local employment and their contribution to the economy cannot be over emphasised. These small businesses will lead the way in helping Ireland to recover faster and stronger. I call on the citizens of Ireland to join me in congratulating these companies on their achievement!”

The Category Award Winners are as follows:
MANUFACTURING AWARD (up to 50 employees); sponsored by Chartered Accountants Ireland
The Manufacturing Award went to Moll Industries Ireland (Donegal).
Moll Industries Ireland is a custom technical moulding and assembly company and an outsourcing manufacturing partner for Life Science and High Tech products. Managing Director Helen Masterson was part of a management buyout from Moll’s US owners in 2010 and since then the company has gone from strength to strength. Staff numbers have increased from 16, mostly on short time, to 20 full-time and this is expected to continue to increase in the near future
FOOD & DRINK AWARD (up to 50 employees), sponsored by Bord Bia
The Winner of this category was Celtic Pure (Monaghan), whilst Highly Commended was awarded to Trudies Catering Kitchen (Wexford).
Celtic Pure is an Award winning water bottling plant in south Co Monaghan. With a spring well located on site Celtic Pure produces all its own bottles at its 27,000sqft facility. Last year the company produced just short of 30 million bottles through the plant with all of the water sourced from the three wells now bored on the land. There are 35 people employed in the factory which boasts its own blow moulding facility.
With background’s in Retail and a passion for cooking and entertaining Trudie and Michael Power set up Trudies Catering Kitchen to produce fresh, wholesome and delicious handmade salads, sandwiches , pizzas and pre packed lunch platters delivered in their own refrigerated vans throughout the Leinster and Munster Region. The company believes its unique selling point is that everything is made in house and the team starts at 4am daily to maximise the shelf life for its retail customers

McGee Pharma International (Dublin) was awarded Winner with both Contracting PLUS (Cork) and Ryans Cleaning Event Specialists (Tipperary) Highly Commended in this category.
McGee Pharma International has grown significantly from small beginnings, having identified a niche in the consultancy marketplace in 2004 for hands-on experience of the regulatory environment and the implications of non-compliance for the pharmaceutical and allied sectors. Already this year, the company has provided bespoke training to over 50 of the global headquarters team of a major multinational company. This is one company that has mapped its way to becoming a significant player in the pharmaceutical sector globally.
As Specialist Accountants, Contracting PLUS looks after all the accounting, administration and taxation for professional contractors. Services are offered to both long term and short term contractors in Engineering, IT Aviation, Medical and other professions. The company also works closely with Recruitment Agencies to ensure their Contractors have a tax efficient and compliant service.
Ryans Cleaning Event Specialists are well known for their event cleaning specialist services here in Ireland – ranging from one day shows to large week long events. Following the success of major contracts during the Queen’s Jubilee, the London Olympic Games and the British Formula 1 Grand Prix and Silverstone Ryan’s have now set up offices in both Manchester and Birmingham in the last year. With a major commitment to quality control the company has followed an ISO accreditation plan and having passed stage two external audits they are now seeking certification of ISO 20121.
OUTSTANDING SMALL BUSINESS (up to five employees), sponsored by AIB
Celtic Rider (Dublin) is the Winner in this category and Highly Commended went to Foregolf (Meath).
Formed in 2007 to promote Motorcycle Tourism in Ireland. Celtic Rider has grown each year with its self-guided tour options, with routes and accommodation downloaded to Garmin GPS, proving very successful. Founded and run by experienced motorcyclists the Celtic Rider team understands the needs of their fellow adventure riders from overseas and always strive to achieve a very fluid touring experience for them.
Set up in Naas, Co Kildare in 1997, the idea for ForeGolf came about when founder and co-director Derek Murray realised that a ‘one size fits all’ solution to buying golf clubs didn’t make any sense. According to Derek there is no such thing as a standard human. ForeGolf custom fit and builds golf clubs. During an analysis session they demonstrate what club is best suited to the way you already play.
INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR (up to 50 employees), sponsored by Enterprise Ireland

Clevamama is a multi-award winning international company, renowned for its pioneering, practical and well-designed baby products. Established by working Mums and sisters Martina Delaney and Suzanne Browne, the products are designed by Mums for Mums. Clevamama took part in a recent Enterprise Ireland trade mission to Brazil where they met with the president of the Society of Paediatrics to share research they carried out in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY (up to 50 employees), sponsored by The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
The Winner of this category was M & T Plant Hire (Wexford).
Having started out in 1980 with a single tractor and slurry tanker emptying and cleaning out septic tanks M&T Plant Hire has expanded over the years to provide a range of related services, and most recently opened a composting facility at a purpose built 2,000sqft state- of-the-art facility to convert its waste products into a range of organic fertilisers. Sustainability is the principle through which M&T operates with the reduction of waste, its reuse and recycling and its equipment run on biofuels that are grown from the soils to which this very compost has been applied.
EMERGING NEW BUSINESS (up to 50 employees and under two years old), sponsored by The County and City Enterprise Boards
This section allows new companies (less than two years old) to present their business to a panel of experts. Having assessed these businesses the judges from the County and City Enterprise Boards selected five companies which were showcased at the Gala Awards Ceremony as having the potential to grow, be innovative, create employment and have the ability to win at the SFA National Small Business Awards in the future.
The five companies chosen in this section were: Eight Degrees Brewing Company (Cork), Element Software (Galway), Hailstorm Commerce (Limerick), Maven TM (Carlow) and SilverCloud Health (Dublin).
Eight Degrees Brewing Company was set up by Australian Cameron Wallace and New Zealander Scott Baigent who met in Dublin over ten years ago while sharing a house. Both had a love of travel and a fondness for tasty ‘craft’ beer and decided to set up a microbrewery in Ireland. In 2010 they gave up their jobs to follow their hobby and went to Berlin to the VLB Microbiology Institute to study brewing science and the rest is history. They are now brewing in Mitchelstown Co. Cork using only natural ingredients -- malted barley, hops, Galtee water and brewer’s yeast -- and no added chemicals or artificial preservatives.
Element Software are leaders in mobile app software development, working with clients such as Ericsson Ireland and Sage CRM. Their award-winning product, Element Wave is a mobile marketing tool that dramatically increases mobile app user engagement and user retention, thereby significantly increasing revenues generated through your mobile app.
With a personal investment of €80,000 and enterprise grants James Vizor set up Hailstorm Commerce, an ecommerce Development and Marketing Agency that specialises in building both B2C and B2B ecommerce sites that succeed online. This ambitious company has doubled the size of the company since its inception and James is targeting a turnover of €2m in 2013 and expects to have 30 staff by the end of the year.
Founded in 2011 by Mark Cradock Maven TM is a provider of world class, multi-lingual, B2B Telemarketing and Inside Sales Services, with a particular specialisation in new and emerging technology solutions. Now with over 65 technology clients in six countries, it has grown to employing over 15 people who deliver its services in 11 languages across 13 time zones, calling into 23 countries.
SilverCloud Health employs five full-time staff and four part-time and has recently been recognised as a High Potential Start-Up company by Enterprise Ireland. SilverCloud has developed an innovative cost effective online health & wellness e-therapy delivery platform which enables healthcare organisations to deliver a broad range of highly engaging & interactive online healthcare content, programmes and support to their patients.
